How to Choose the Right Packing Tape for Shipping and Storage

Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packing Tape, Clear, Shipping and Packaging Supplies, 1.88 in. x 54.6 yd., 6 Tape Rolls Office

When you need to seal a box for shipping or storage, grabbing any roll of tape from the drawer might seem fine. But the difference between ordinary tape and heavy-duty packing tape becomes obvious the moment your package hits a delivery truck or gets stacked in a moving van. Understanding what packing tape does, and which kind suits your needs, saves money and frustration.

What Does Heavy-Duty Packing Tape Actually Do?

Packing tape serves one essential job: keeping boxes sealed through handling, stacking, and transport. Ordinary tape may stick initially, but it can split, sliver, or lose grip when boxes are crushed, bent, or exposed to temperature changes. Heavy-duty formulations are thicker and use stronger adhesive to resist these stresses.

Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packing Tape comes in rolls measuring 1.88 inches wide by 54.6 yards long, with a 3-inch core. The tape is 3.0 mils thick, which is the measurement of the plastic film itself. This thickness matters because it affects how much force the tape can withstand without tearing or stretching.

Understanding Width and Length for Your Needs

The 1.88-inch width is the industry standard for box sealing. This width covers most box seams completely and allows you to seal a typical box with a single strip across each seam, top and bottom. If you're working with boxes narrower than 8 inches across, standard width may overlap more than necessary. For wider boxes or heavily loaded parcels, one strip per seam is still sufficient with heavy-duty tape, whereas lighter tapes might need two strips.

The 54.6-yard length per roll matters for volume. A single roll seals roughly 25 to 30 boxes, depending on box size. The Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packing Tape comes in a 6-roll pack, giving you enough tape for roughly 150 to 180 boxes. This makes sense if you ship regularly or move frequently. If you seal boxes once or twice a year, a smaller quantity makes more sense.

Which Boxes Need Heavy-Duty Tape?

Not every box requires industrial-strength adhesive. Standard tape works fine for light items, small boxes, and short-distance moves. Heavy-duty tape is worth using when boxes contain heavier items, when packages will be transported long distances, or when boxes will be stacked under other freight.

One advantage of Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packing Tape is that it works on all box types, including 100% recycled cardboard. Recycled boxes have a rougher, dustier surface that some adhesives struggle to grip. The industrial-strength, solvent-free adhesive used in this tape adheres instantly to those difficult surfaces without additional pressure or waiting time.

How to Use Packing Tape Effectively

Proper application makes a significant difference. Run tape along the center seam of the box (where two flaps meet) and extend it partway down each side. Then apply a second piece along the bottom seam on the inside of the box if possible, or along the bottom seam on the outside if the box won't be opened again. This H-pattern sealing prevents boxes from splitting open under pressure.

Make sure the box surface is clean and dry before applying tape. Dust or moisture reduces adhesion. Press the tape firmly as you apply it to activate the adhesive fully. If you seal many boxes, a tape dispenser makes the job faster and more consistent—and Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packing Tape rolls fit standard dispensers.

Storage and Shelf Life

Packing tape doesn't expire, but it can dry out if exposed to extreme heat or sunlight for years. Store unused rolls in a cool, dry place, ideally in their original packaging. A 6-roll pack of Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packing Tape, properly stored, will remain effective for years.

If you're a frequent shipper, rotating through stock regularly means tape is always fresh. If you buy in bulk and use tape infrequently, store unopened packs away from direct sunlight and heat sources to preserve adhesive strength.
