If you're shopping for electrical switches, you've probably noticed there are far more options than you'd expect. The Leviton 5334-W is a commercial-grade combination switch that appears in both commercial buildings and residential applications. Before you buy, it helps to understand what makes this type of switch different, and whether it's what you actually need.

What Is a Combination Switch?

A combination switch is a single device that contains two separate switch mechanisms in one wallplate slot. The Leviton 5334-W specifically has two single-pole switches side by side, which means each switch operates independently. This differs from a standard single switch, which controls one circuit. A duplex style combination switch fits into the same space as a regular switch, making it useful when you want to control two separate lights or circuits from one location without taking up extra wall space.

The key word here is "duplex." When manufacturers use this term for switches, they mean two switches in one unit. It's different from a duplex electrical outlet, so don't confuse the two.

Understanding the Leviton 5334-W Specifications

The model number 5334-W tells you specific things about this switch. The "20 amp" rating means it can safely handle electrical loads up to 20 amps. The "120/277 volt" specification indicates it works with both standard household voltage (120V) and higher commercial voltage (277V), which is common in office buildings and larger facilities. The Leviton 5334-W fits standard wallboxes, meaning it works with any normal electrical outlet box you'd find in walls built to standard building codes. However, you should verify your box is deep enough to accommodate the switch body and wiring comfortably. Overcrowded boxes make installation difficult and can damage wires.

When Combination Switches Make Sense

The commercial-grade construction makes sense in high-traffic areas where switches get frequent use, or where durability justifies the cost. In a home with normal usage, a standard residential switch works fine, but the Leviton 5334-W won't fail you either.

These switches don't require maintenance beyond occasional dusting. They should last many years without replacement if properly installed.
