Metroid Dread - Nintendo Switch
Metroid Dread - Nintendo Switch The Nintendo Switch has been out for a little over a year now, and in that time, it has amassed a library of excellent games. One genre that has been somewhat neglected on the system, however, is the Metroidvania. There are a few titles that scratch that itch, but they tend to be ports of older games or indies with a limited scope. Metroid Dread, a newly announced entry in the Metroid series, looks like it could be the Switch's first great Metroidvania. The last 2D Metroid game came out in 2002 on the GameCube, and while there have been a few 3D entries in the series since then, none have captured the magic of the 2D games. Metroid Dread seems like it could be a return to form for the series. The game is set on the planet ZDR, and Samus will have to explore the many environments there to uncover a mysterious transmission. The E.M.M.I. robots that Samus encounters will be more deadly than ever, and the research machines pose a new threat. Metroid Dread looks like it could be a great addition to the Switch library. The return to 2D Metroid gameplay is welcome, and the new planet to explore should give players plenty to do. The game is also being developed by MercurySteam, the studio behind the excellent Castlevania: Lords of Shadow games, so we know they know their way around a Metroidvania. Metroid Dread is currently without a release date, but it is expected to come out sometime in 2020.
